Management Plan

Every property inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List must have its own Management Plan, an operational tool that guarantees that the assets are identified, protected, preserved, enhanced and handed down to future generations.

An effective Management Plan must:

  • be able to to maintain the balance between conservation and development;
  • be constructed as much as possible through a participatory approach and based on a governance system where all the stakeholders of the territory are involved;
  • be a dynamic tool able to plan short, medium and long term actions;
  • provide for moments of monitoring and feedback of the results;
  • identify actions capable of mitigating the risks and negative impacts affecting the property

In the case of the Porticoes of Bologna, the first step was a phase of exploratory analysis, which dealt with territorial and socio-economic identity and stakeholders. In this perspective, the involvement of the population and the evaluation of the possible impacts of the nomination on the territory are of the utmost importance.

For the management of the UNESCO site, a dedicated Office has been set up within the Municipality of Bologna to deal with issues strictly related to the porticoes and to the management, enhancement and protection of the UNESCO site. This office will be joined by a Control Room, composed of the institutions and social and economic forces of the city, which have already co-operated in the preparatory phase of the nomination:
