Ensemble Cantilena Antiqua, which was founded by Stefano Albarello in Bologna (Italy) in 1987, consists of musicians who specialize in performing both sacred and profane repertories of the Middle Age and the Renaissance. The retrieval of such repertories is the result of close research into the musical sources, the literature and the history of the periods taken into consideration. ECA is able to change and enrich their consorts by the contribution of experts in the field of performance as well in the ambit of theory. ECA make use of copies of historical instruments particularly deepening the aspect of performance on the account of the musical tradition handed down to these days. The instruments, which vary according to the period taken into consideration, are lutes of varying size, flutes, bombardes, hurdy-gurdy, symphonia, fiddles, percussions, viols. As far as voices are concerned, the singers vary each time according to the polyphony, having a preference for male voices and counter tenor.
"...Our research into the ancient musical repertory includes an attentive examination of a wide range of different musical tradition so as to reach a reliable sound each time changing our musical and vocal staff on account of the customs and traditions of the stated period."
"...In proposing our musical material we intend to foreshorten a variety of different musical and cultural traditions which constitute a patrimony of vital importance."
"...Only through the knowledge of our historical past, in fact, we may be able to reacquire the inestimable patrimony of our cultural inheritance."
Ensemble Cantilena Antiqua has been invited to perform in the principals Early Music festivals.
