The exhibitions displays twenty-four layouts for completing the San Petronio basilica in Bologna, developed between 16th and 18th century by well-known artists such as Domenico Aimo, Alberto Alberti, Giacomo Barozzi aka Vignola, Egidio Maria Bordoni, Andrea da Formigine, Cristoforo Lombardo, Francesco Morandi detto il Terribilia, Andrea Palladio, Baldassarre Peruzzi, Ercole Procaccini, Girolamo Rainaldi, Giacomo Ranuzzi, Giulio Romano, Mauro Antonio Tesi, Domenico Tibaldi. Documents, coins, portraits of the patrons are also displayed.
The layouts, never exhibited before, are property of the Museo di San Petronio and have been recently restored by the Soprintendenza per il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico e Demoetnoantropologico of Bologna.

The church was established by the Guelph Commune to celebrate the city freedom as a civic temple dedicated to the bishop Petronio, patron saint of Bologna, and its foundations laid down starting from 1390. It is one of the most well-famed church in Italy, having been the place of many historical events such as crowning of Emperor Charles V in 1530.

The building, and particularly its façade, has been left unfinished: the former project, by Antonio di Vincenzo, was never brought to an end, as it happened to the proposals for completing the church's façade which followed. This was due to financial hindrances as well as to disagreements on the building's style on the part of the developers, the Fabbriceri, also depending on the clashing aims of the city government and the State of the Church (Bologna being part of it from the beginning of 16th century). Also the projects developed in 19th and 20th Century (non exhibited here) were equally rejected, giving the church its "unfinished" character.

On the occasion of the exhibition, a contest "Idee in mostra" will be launched amongst the students for developing design proposals for the completion of the façade. The best layouts will be awarded a tour for visiting other important basilicas in the region.
