The church was established by the Guelph Commune to celebrate the city freedom as a civic temple dedicated to the bishop Petronio, patron saint of Bologna, and its foundations laid down starting from 1390. It is one of the most well-famed church in Italy, having been the place of many historical events such as crowning of Emperor Charles V in 1530. |

The building, and particularly its façade, has been left unfinished: the former project, by Antonio di Vincenzo, was never brought to an end, as it happened to the proposals for completing the church's façade which followed. This was due to financial hindrances as well as to disagreements on the building's style on the part of the developers, the Fabbriceri, also depending on the clashing aims of the city government and the State of the Church (Bologna being part of it from the beginning of 16th century). Also the projects developed in 19th and 20th Century (non exhibited here) were equally rejected, giving the church its "unfinished" character. |
