The European network includes public and private organisations which care for cemeteries considered to be of historical or artistic importance. ASCE is a no-profit organisation with the aim to promote, protect, restore and maintain European cemeteries.
In order to fulfil its purposes, the Association promotes the sharing of experiences and best practices, the implementation of common projects, the promotion of new technologies and the involvement of media and tourist publishing in its activities.
At present, ASCE includes 179 members, from 22 European countries.
The City of Bologna, which is part of the network thanks to the magnificent Certosa di Bologna historical monumental cemetery, is holding now the Vice-presidency and is member of the Steering Committee.
The Presidency is entrusted to the City of Maribor, Slovenia.

The Certosa di Bologna is one of the most ancient historical monumental cemeteries in Europe, a renowned monument unique in the world, unique place for the architecture of the 19th and 20th century and for the huge heritage of paintings and sculptures that made it a favourite destination of Bologna visitors across the ‘800s.
