Bologna and New York city united by the Survivor Tree

In the framework of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Strage di Bologna, the bombing at the Bologna train station on August 2nd, 1980, on September 11th a ceremony was held in the public park named after this tragic event, for the planting of the Callery pear tree donated to the city of Bologna by the 9/11 Memorial and Musem in New York. The tree is a sapling of the famous Survivor Tree, which was saved from the attacks of 9/11 2001 and today symbol of rebirth and resilience for any community that has endured a collective tragedy.

The donation was possible thanks to the initiative of and American citizen, Ms Joyce Joyce NG, survivor of the 9/11 attack and founder and President of the non-profit charity 9/11 Survivors of 3 World Trade Center: She was visiting Bologna a few years ago and, having learnt about the Strage di Bologna, the bombing at the station in 1980, and about the public park named after the New York attack, had the idea of putting forward the project of donation to the city of Bologna.

The ceremony, streamed on Facebook, included a speech by the Vicemayor Ms Valentina Orioli, the President f Association of Relatives of Victims to the Bombing at the Bologna Train Station on August 2nd, 1980, Mr. Paolo Bolognesi, and the Consul General of the United States in Florence, Ms. Ragini Gupta, who then disclosed the special commemoration plate placed beside the tree.
