A very special international guest welcomed by Bologna Cares

On March 2nd, the 3-days welfare event “Bologna Cares” promoted by the Municipality of Bologna, in cooperation with Bologna University and AUSL (the Local Health Organization) is ended with a widely positive result, with a large participation of citizens and health professionals.
As a special speaker on the opening day, the prestigious Aula Magna Santa Lucia hall has welcomed Professor Sir Michael Marmot, world renowned epidemiologist and Director of the Institute of Health Equity of the University College London, who held an interesting lecture on social justice and health equity, very much appreciated by the audience.
The Professor has then spent the afternoon in meeting the protagonists of two meaningful welfare practices experienced in town: he first visited an apartment group from the international project SPRAR Vulnerabili, meeting the team leading the project in Bologna, then he visited the Beltrame Reception center and BelleTrame community lab, the oldest shelter in Bologna to host people in serious social need, with a special eye on homeless people with health issues.
The Professor has greatly appreciated the many activities implemented by the social service network in Bologna and positively welcomed the intention of the Municipality to have Bologna become a “Marmot City”, i.e. a city aiming at reducing inequality and improving health outcomes, thus respecting the so-called Marmot principles. The project will be evaluated by the City Government in the next coming months.
