European Capitals of Culture: Bologna signs the Florence declaration

On November 5 and 6 Florence hosted the first ever Conference of the Mayors of European Capitals of Culture, bringing together representatives from 45 cities who have held the title, starting from 1985, or have been designated for the next few years. Italy has held the title three times in its history (Florence in 1986, Bologna in 2000 and Genoa in 2004), while Matera is set to take over in 2019, along with Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The final result of the two-day.conference was a declaration in which all the signatory cities, including Bologna, set a common strategy recognizing culture as a growing priority in Europe’s public agenda - both in terms of policies and of resources at every level.
In the first European Year of Cultural Heritage, this new democratic and Europeanist coalition will start from the cities and from culture as the basis for social dialogue, identity and cohesion, and as a positive thrust for the economic development of the European Union.
