Mission to Tirana

Mayor Merola came back last 11th April from the official visit he held in Tirana, Albania, under invitation of Tirana's mayor Erion Veliaj. He was accompanied by Bologna Deputy Mayor for International Relations Mr. Marco Lombardo and the Head of the Cabinet and Managing Director Mr. Valerio Montalto.
The visit started on Tuesday 10 April with a meeting with Mayor Veliaj, discussing on how to strengthen their relationships on topics like youth employment, and on projects in the field of agritourism. After the meeting, the delegation was led to a guided tour in town, visiting the major historical sites and monuments.
The two mayors have also planted an oak, within a public park in the city centre, as a sign of friendship between the two cities.
On the second day, the Bologna delegation held a meeting, organized by the Italian Embassy, with the Albanian vice Minister for Education, Sports and Youth, Ms. Besa Shahini, to discuss about possible synergies in the field of education for infant school.
Both Merola and Veliaj agree upon the importance that their cities can have for the European Urban  Agenda: Albania has obtained in 2014 the status of official candidate to the Eruopean Union.Mayor Merola has found several contact points with his counterpart Erion Veliaj, who has actually been governing the capital city in a most dynamic and modern way, in view of Albaina's entry in the European Union. A cooperation has been then started between the two cities, on topics such as environmental sustainability, circular economy, urban development, local public services, agroalimentary business and welcome policies for universiaty students.
