Itabashi calls Bologna: the contest

"Itabashi calls Bologna": this is the design contest that was launched on December 6, promoted by the Municipality di Bologna, Municipality of Itabashi, Urban Center Bologna, Matsuda Hirata Architects Spa and Bologna Professional Order of Architects, with the patronage of University of Bologna, Bologna Academy of Fine Arts, and Bologna Professional Order of Engineers.
The call is open to all students in architecture, industrial design, architecture and building engineering, from the University of Bologna, and from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. It is also open to graduates in the same subjects, provided they are under 30, who are resident in the Metropolitan city of Bologna, or are members of the Bologna Professional Orders of Architects and Engineers.
The initiative, announced last August during the mission to Japan by Bologna deputy mayor for Urban Planning Ms. Valentina Orioli, concerns the design of a permanent section, especially dedicated to the city of Bologna, inside the new public Library of the city of Itabashi (Tokyo), sister city to Bologna.
The Library will be located inside the Peace Park, and on the ground floor it will house the “Bologna Children’s Book Hall”. This section shall be representing the city of Bologna both from cultural and tourist point of view, and illustrate the major characters of Bologna to the Japanese public.
The choice of the major topic, and of the name for the permanent section, is free and constitutes an essential part of the design proposal sent by each competitor.
The contest winner will be asked for more details on his/her project, to be then carried out under the supervision of the studio Matsuda Hirata Architects Spa, currently working on the design and costruction of the entire Library, which is due to open in March 2021.

The whole project, moreover, is to be seen in the framework of the 15th anniversary of the partnership between Bologna and Itabashi, recurring in the year 2020. The relationship with Itabashi is one of the most intense and fruitful partnerships that Bologna has at international level. The intense exchange between the two cities dates back to the Eighties, as the Itabashi Art Museum of Tokyo began to host, year after year, a selection of books coming from the Bologna Children’s Book Fair; later on, the relationship increased more and more, until an official cooperation agreement was signed in 2005.
