Bologna leading ROCK, the urban project to regenerate the University area

From 14 to 16 june, the City of Bologna hosted the kick-off event of ROCK - acronym for Regeneration and Optimization of Cultural heritage in creative and Knowledge cities, the European project coordinated by the Municipality of Bologna in strict cooperation with Alma Mater Studiorum - the University of Bologna.
The event was attended by about a hundred participants, representing the 32 international partners of the project, who gathered in Bologna to kick-off the activities to involve 10 cities, 7 universities, city networks (including ICLEI, Eurocities and Villes Lumières), urban development agencies, foundations and bodies specialized in business service, regeneration of cultural heritage and sustainability of Cultural Creative Industries, networks of enterprises and industrial parteners, all coming from 13 different European countries.
During the next 3 years, 7 role model cities (Lyon, Turin, Liverpool, Vilnius, Cluj-Napoca, Athens, Eindhoven), having already developed successful regeneration actions through the improvement of the cultural and creative heritage, will transfer their knowledge and experience to 3 replicant cities (Lisbon, Skopje, Bologna), using workshops, innovative data collecting methods, mentoring, communication, city branding, and other urban regeneration tools, which will be adapted, implemented and shared for the whole duration of the project.
The aim of ROCK - which has ranked first in the call Cultural Heritage as a driver for sustainable growth, within the European programme Horizon 2020 - is to reaffirm the true identity of the university area, by turning it into an open workshop and a cultural and creative district: a public space for the co-regeneration of a sustainable model of urban regeneration, based on the local cultural and creative heritage. The actions in Bologna are co-designed and co-developed by all the local stakeholders which are somehow connected to the university: a consortium of public and private subjects, like Emilia Romagna Region, Opera House of Bologna, Academy of Fine Arts, National Gallery, Music Conservatory, MAST Foundation, Marino Golinelli Foundation, Del Monte Foundation/Unicredit Bank, Tper - Public Transport Agency, Hera and other economic and trade associations, cultural operators and associations.
The City of Bologna is coordinating the project through its Department for Culture and Relationship with the University, the International Relations and Projects Office, the Divisions of Enviroment, Urban Development and Digital Agenda, in cooperation with Urban Center and the University of Bologna.
