European Green Capital: Bologna applies for 2019

On November 2016 Bologna announced its candidacy as one of the 14 European cities running for the European Green Capital 2019.
The Green awards Europe showcase what is possible when a city commits to sustainable development and are an important recognition of those cities where innovative urban environmental management and initiatives have taken hold. Compared to the previous editions, for this cycle there have been a record number of 28 applicants, with the following cities and towns entering the competitions beside the Italian Bologna and Florence: Arad (Romania), Funchal and Lisbon (Portugal), Ghent (Belgium), Kamëz (Albania), Lahti (Finland), Oslo (Norway), Pecs (Hungary), Seville (Spain), Strasbourg (France), Tallinn (Estonia) and Wroclaw (Poland).
The next steps for Applicant Cities are as follows:
Out of the 14 applicants, 3 finalists will be shortlisted in April 2017.
Jury presentations by the Shortlisted Cities will follow in June 2017.
The winner of the 2019 title will be announced at the Award Ceremony, to be held in Essen, Germany, in June 2017, on the days following the presentation to the Jury.

European Green Capital Award winners, among which Stockholm, Hamburg, Nantes and Copenhagen in the past, lead the way in setting higher standards in sustainable urban development, listening to what their citizens want and pioneering innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
Being a European Green Capital also means having a higher international visibility and open up to new collaborations from abroad: a new great opportunity for the city of Bologna.
