Church of San Girolamo della Certosa

Founded in 1334 by bequest of a jurist, the Carthusian monastery was dedicated to Saint Jerome. The church of the monastery, in the Gothic style and provided with an inverted T-plan, consists of a large aisle with chapels and service rooms located on the side. In the course of time, the church has been enriched with beautiful works of art, part of which ended up in various public collections of the city. At the moment, the church integrally conserves the painting and stucco decoration of the main altar made by Bartolomeo Cesi at the end of the 16th century, as well as some of the furnishings, such as the magnificent wooden choir carved by Biagio de Marchi in 1539. The most important artists at the time in Bologna were commissioned to paint Christological cycle paintings for the church. Among these are: Giovanni Andrea Sirani and his daughter Elisabetta Sirani, Giovan Francesco Gessi (“The Miraculous Catch of Fish, 1645; “The Expulsion of the Merchants from the Temple”, 1648), Giovanni Maria Galli Bibiena (“Ascension of Christ”, 1651), Lorenzo Pasinelli (“Christ Appearing to his mother”, 1657; “Entry of Christ into Jerusalem”, 1658), Domenico Maria Canuti (“Last Judgement”, 1658), and the Neapolitan painter Nunzio Rossi (“Nativity”, 1644). In the chapels on the side, paintings of the Carracci brothers Ludovico and Agostino (such as the “Communion of St. Jerome”, 1591) and Guercino (“Vision of Saint Bruno”, 1647) were also located. They now are conserved in the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Bologna.
