The theatre was built in 1810 in the area of the ancient convent of Saint Mary Magdalene, only some original parts of which still survive.
The Neoclassic front was realized by Gaetano Rubbi in 1888.
The Arena del Sole, projected as a summer theatre and for daytime program schedules, in 1916 was provided with a removable cover system to allow its use also during the winter.
The structure was turned into a cinema between 1949 and 1986, when it was acquired by the Municipality of Bologna to donate to the city a theatre specifically for prose performances.
Re-opened in 1995, the “new” Arena del Sole was provided with the “Sala Grande” (Grand Hall), the “Interaction Hall” and the “Chiostro dell'Arena”, the ancient cloister of the convent used for summer shows.
The Arena del Sole Theatre is considered one of the most beautiful Italian theatres. Even if provided with the most advanced technological equipment, it maintains its historical charm and prestige.
The Arena del Sole Theatre is managed by the Nuova Scena - Teatro Stabile di Bologna.
Besides prose, the schedule also provides modern ballet and contemporary dance performances, as well as classic, pop and jazz music programs.
