It is one of the most famous Italian National Picture Galleries. It hosts a very important paintings collection of the Bolognese and Italian schools dating from the 13th to the 18th century, whose most outstanding names are Giotto, Vitale da Bologna, Cossa, Raffaello, Ludovico and Annibale Carracci, Guido Reni, Guercino, Crespi and Creti. The collection was set up in the 18th century starting from a set of works of art coming from the Accademia Clementina. It was further enriched by paintings coming from deconsecrated or closed down buildings. After the fall of the Napoleonic Empire, the collection was supplemented with works confiscated from the French. Further extensions occurred throughout the 20th century.
