Baroque church located in the city centre, designed by Tommaso Martelli and built between 1589 and 1633. The church was deconsecrated in the Napoleonic epoch.
Since 1914, archaeological excavations carried out in the central part of the aisle have brought to light remains of earlier structures, the most ancient of which date back to the Villanovan phase. A cemetery datable to the 15th and 16th centuries was excavated as well. Late medieval phases were identified in the apse, while all the area underneath reveals a Roman presence.
In 1943, during World War Two, the building was so damaged by the air bombings of the 2nd and 25th of September that it was demolished. Thanks to the intervention of the “Deputazione di Storia Patria”, a society founded in 1860 to promote historical studies concerning Bologna, the structure was conserved.
Acquired in 1992 by the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation in Bologna, it first became the seat of its “Art and Historic Collections” and, finally (2009) a library, holding a large patrimony of books and artworks. They consist of antique and modern volumes concerning the art and history of the territory of Bologna, as well as manuscripts, books printed before 1501 (incunabula) and in the 16th century (cinqeucentine), edicts, posters of public announcements, a very large collection of prints, and the photographic archive.
